Picker's Roundup for Thursday 04/24/2014
Greetings fellow Antelope Valley live music lovers. Welcome to Picker’s Roundup, the one stop source for all your weekend entertainment planning needs. Although the focus is primarily on live performance music and the fine musicians that live and play in the Antelope Valley, we will occasionally head out of town to a particularly fun event. So get out and have some fun this week, and on behalf of local performers everywhere, we thank you for your support. There is quite a bit of ground to cover, so let’s get started. For more details, click any of the underlined links to open fan pages and websites.
Roundup Spotlight. To say that Walker Gibson and Roby Duron are two of the valley’s best musicians is kind of like saying Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig were a couple of pretty good ball players. A few of us had the great pleasure of seeing them in “Unplugged” mode last Tuesday evening in the lobby of the Courtyard by Marriott in Palmdale. There were Davenports and over-stuffed comfy chairs. There were hotel guests having a beverage or two after a hard day’s work. And there was a couple of us from the outside that caught an intriguing little post that Walker dropped on his Face Book timeline promising a "Simulated Vacation Exprerience, complete with the sounds, sights, and smells of a real hotel lobby". This was the setting for one of the most intimate and pleasurable musical adventures I’ve had in quite some time. It was as close as you can get having the two of them stop by your house for a couple of hours.
Their set was mostly classic R&R and Blues favorites, but the perfectly executed songs seemed almost to exist solely as a vehicle to take us on a very rewarding musical holiday. Gracefully twisting and turning down the back roads and alleys and country woods spanning decades of popular titles, they were in complete control of our little outing. These two function as one, taking turns being in the supporting role, laying down the solid rhythmic and percussive foundation necessary for the other one to do his high wire act. The nonverbal communication between these two is uncanny. Being a lifelong musician, I often find it difficult to simply enjoy a performance because I tend to over analyze and criticize what I see and hear. I have no such difficulties when I’m in the very capable hands of Messer’s Gibson and Duron.
You can catch these two doing their thing every Tuesday at the Marriott Courtyard Palmdale from 5:30 until 7:00 PM. Please enjoy this Video of Walker and Roby covering Sultans of Swing from last week’s show, then get down there next Tuesday to see the real deal and get the full effect. Don’t forget to drop a Ducket in the Bucket while you’re there. Tell ‘em Picker sent you.
Neilstock X is coming up on May 17th, let me know if you need tickets. I still have access to tickets but they’re going quickly so don’t wait any longer. Message me at (661) 965-4763 or email@example.com tickets or more information.
Picker’s Rock & Roll Pick of the Week: Saturday 04/26/2014: NSA (Not Signing Anything) will be making some seriously good Rock & Roll music, ONE NIGHT ONLY, up in Lancaster at the AV Road House at Casa Roma
Roundup Tip of the Week: The Face Book Events page is a great place to show your support for your local music scene. I always click the “JOIN” button when I get an invitation to an event and here’s why; 1. It is a great way to remind yourself what’s happening that day. 2. It shows support for your local bands and musicians. The more people that are in “GOING” status, the more likely the casual fan will be motivated to get involved. People like being with other people. 3. It’s a great way to get your friends together for a well-planned night on the town. Remember to celebrate responsibly. If alcohol is going to be part of the plan, be sure to designate a sober driver to get everyone home safely.
