Septic Maintenance Tips from John Manning

Thursday, May 05, 2016

Dear Antelope Valley Resident,

Are you a home or property owner that has a septic tank, or will you soon be purchasing a home with a septic tank? Septic tanks may seem like a scary responsibility, but, in reality most septic systems are fairly maintenance and hassle free. In fact a well built and properly maintained septic tank could last a homeowner indefinitely. That being said however, the underground area where your sewage drainpipes are located, known as the leach field, usually calls for some sort of treatment and even replacement after fifteen to twenty years of use.

When dealing with a septic tank keep in mind the following recommendations and simple rules to help keep your septic system trouble free for several years:

  • Too much water can cause the septic system to back up.
  • Be mindful of the chemicals you pour down the drain. Normal amounts of household chemicals are fine, but dumping excessive amounts can cause bacterial problems.
  • Avoid depositing cooking fats, greases, coffee grounds, disposable diapers, heavy duty paper towels, cigarette butts, and other kinds of non-decomposable materials.

Regardless of how careful you are at maintaining your septic tank and how diligent you are at making sure you do not dispose the wrong substances and materials down the drain, your septic tank will need to be cleaned and pumped by a professional service every one to three years. Also, if the grounds around your septic tank are releasing noxious fumes, or you suspect your tank may be leaking or damaged in some way, it is always wisest to call a professional to be safe. We at John Manning Plumbing, Drain & Septic can help you with all of your septic tank needs, and have been happily servicing the Antelope Valley for over 20 years.
